It’s New, It’s Now, It’s Yum

There are many indicators that signal the beginning of the holiday season, but at a time when Christmas decorations are up in September, it seems sensible to come up with a more discrete way to bracket the season. France has a suggestion: Beaujolais Nouveau. The soda-pop of red wine, Beaujolais Nouveau is uncorked each year on the third Thursday in November. It’s cheap, it’s tasty, and it’s gone by January. Fermented for only eight weeks, this juice is the first taste of the 2007 harvest — instant gratification for vintners. Plenty of places in St. Louis are ready to help you satisfy your wine craving tonight, including the Wine & Cheese Place (7435 Forsyth Boulevard, Clayton; 314-727-8788), where tasting is free from 2 to 6 p.m., and Brandt’s Café (6525 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-3663), where from 7 to 10:30 p.m., Elsie Parker and the Poor People of Paris are performing to celebrate the release of their new CD, Je t’aime encore, alongside the release of the new Beaujolais. Bon appétit!
