Can you recall what you were doing on any summer Saturday? Far easier to remember what we were doing on August 9, 2014. That's the day Michael Brown was fatally shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, and from that point on the north-county municipality's national profile changed. But of course what happened in Ferguson didn't spring forth from a vacuum; there were patterns in place, deep histories that could only have been missed by those not paying attention (or not wanting to). Historian Jelani Cobb explores these antecedents in his lecture "Before Michael: Brutality and the Policing of Black America" as part of the Missouri Humanities Festival.
