Jill Scott

7 p.m. Thursday, August 4. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 14141 Riverport Drive.

For many of us, the neighborhood block parties of yore were mostly sedate affairs — some room-temperature macaroni salad, maybe a water-balloon toss and plenty of cold canned beer for the adults to enjoy. With all due respect to the sleepy suburbs, Jill Scott's Summer Block Party sounds like a much better time. The neo-soul singer's easy, seductive flow and lush, laid-back jams are the perfect cure for a sweaty summer, and on 2011's The Light of the Sun, Scott continues to refine her endlessly sunny approach to sophisticated R&B. Doug E. Fresh acts as the host for the party, which features Anthony Hamilton (Scott's duet partner on this year's single "So in Love"), old-schoolers Mint Condition and onetime sitcom sidekick DJ Jazzy Jeff.
