Joe Buck Yourself

9 p.m. Friday, January 9. Deluxe, 2733 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood.

If punkabilly multi-instrumentalist Jim Finkley's performance alias, Joe Buck Yourself, doesn't make you chuckle, then you probably need to lighten up a little bit. But contrary to his goofball moniker, Finkley's one-man-band take on rough-edged hellbilly (which he honed as a guitarist and upright bassist for acts such as Th' Legendary Shack Shakers and Hank Williams III) is no joke. Finkley often sounds like a man trying to drive out his own demons by bellowing harsh truths or honestly lamenting his self-medicating ways. His voice has a cadence that in its lighter, more guarded moments recalls Conor Oberst — but the many overdriven, sandpaper-raspy shouts at the Devil make Finkley resemble Satan himself.
