Journey/Foreigner/Night Ranger

7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 14141 Riverport Drive, Maryland Heights.

The summer tradition of the classic-rock triple bill often amounts to little more than a game of three-card Monte with rock's remaining dinosaurs. Call it blind luck, then, that we drew two such aces as Journey and Foreigner. Still touring without iconic lead singer Steve Perry, Journey has proven that it's the song, not the singer, that matters most. And when those songs range from the synth-pulses of "Separate Ways" to the sublime Bay Area love letter "Lights," you can count on some communal sing-alongs. Like Journey, Foreigner has been touring without original vocalist Lou Gramm for some time, but that hasn't kept fans from flocking to sheds and arenas when the band rolls through town. Night Ranger is the wild card in the bill, but it's a pretty safe bet that the band's set will climax with "Sister Christian."
