Killer of Killers

Influential director Seijun Suzuki's Pistol Opera is the 2001 sequel to and remake of his 1967 yakuza classic, Branded to Kill. Stray Cat, the Assassins Guild's No. 3 operative, is given the chance to assume the top rank with her latest assignment: Take out Hundred Eyes, the current No. 1. Along the way she encounters other rival killers with oddly specific modus operandi, including the Painless Surgeon and the mysterious Dark Horse. Suzuki's surreal mix of violence and humor, and his visual flair and jarring editing style are on full display in this one. Pistol Opera screens at 6 p.m. at the Kemper Art Museum on the Washington University campus (1 Brookings Drive; 314-935-4523 or kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu) as part of the Japanese Film Series. Admission is free.
