Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet brings a little something different to the table for today's concertgoers: ballet with a healthy dose of substance. The sixteen-member company — made up of dancers from France to Romania, from Japan to America and Puerto Rico — was founded in 2003 in New York City, and the group focuses on fostering and presenting new and innovative choreography, proving that there's more than one way to stage ballet. With so much meaning packed into those muscular movements, it's left up to us to decipher the messages and absorb the impact by concentrating on both the sights and the sounds, along with all of that gushy stuff filling the spaces in between. Cedar Lake showcases its brand of not-for-the-faint-of-feeling ballet as the guest of Dance St. Louis at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). Shows are at 8 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday (January 28 and 29), and tickets cost $30 to $50. Get 'em at 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org.
