Laugh with the Sinners

St. Paul called himself chief amongst sinners, but the rest of the country calls St. Louis the most sinful city in the nation. VD, obesity, crime and violence: Sin-sational statistics consistently rank our hometown at the tippy-top of the scale (cue Homer Simpson, "In your face, Milwaukee"). Sin City, the new exhibition at phd gallery (2300 Cherokee Street; 314-664-6644 or www.phdstl.com), is a response to those staggering stats and a victory lap for those still on their feet long after the clean-living have tucked themselves in for the night. Painter Josh Chapman, photographer Mark Florida and sculptor Ruth Reese explore the idea of sin in their respective work, presenting the glory of transgression in imagery. Sin City opens with a free public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, August 3. The show remains up through Saturday, August 31, and the phd is open Thursday through Sunday.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 3. Continues through Aug. 31, 2013
