Let's Roll

On a late-winter afternoon many years ago, Ms. Day laced up her new white roller skates at the local rink. She did a few warm-up laps, she felt that her balance was in check — she even felt confident enough to show off her "Shoot the Duck." The music was good ("Mickey" started the session off), and then Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" came on, signifying the start of "East Side-West Side." Day thought, "This just might be the day that I get asked to skate." Yet despite her particularly excellent skills, our young lady didn't get invited to couples-skate that afternoon. As she started to tear up, she realized something very important: She didn't need those silly boys to recognize her talent; Day decided to be the best skater at the rink for herself. And so her empowered love of the wheels began. It is perhaps because of this childhood epiphany that her affection for skating continues to this day. In fact, she likes to show off her abilities during the Happy Hour Skate at Skate King (2700 Kienlen Avenue, Pine Lawn; 314-382-1112). This special session happens from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and costs $5; food is served for free.
