Lette is an electronics engineer with a fantastic new invention. This invention will be presented to the world by his assistant, because Lette is an unacceptably ugly man, according to his boss. But the boss is right. Lette's own wife, Fanny, confirms it, admitting she has never quite looked at him due to his aesthetic misfortune. Crushed by the revelation, Lette seeks solace in radical plastic surgery — a complete facial do-over. The results exceed everyone's expectations, as Lette emerges a beautiful man. So beautiful is the new Lette that his life is turned upside-down. Women want him (and Lette must oblige), men want to look like him, and suddenly beauty abounds. Or does it? In Marius von Mayenburg's Absurdist comedy The Ugly One, beauty is a state of mind, a commodity quickly devalued and a confusing set of rules that are meant to be broken. Echo Theatre Company presents The Ugly One at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday (April 3 through 19; no performance on Sunday, April 12) at Theatre 134 in the ArtSpace at Crestwood Court (Watson and Sappington roads, Crestwood; 800-838-3006 or www.echotheatrecompany.org).
