Beloved for its pop culture references, its fusion of genuine horror and romantic comedy tropes and its use of the music of Queen, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead has played no small part in the resurrection of the zombie as horror movie icon. Pegg plays Shaun, an aimless electronics shop employee who gets dumped by his girlfriend and then forgets his mother's birthday. And then, the dead rise from their graves to feast upon the living. Galvanized by this crisis, Shaun and his slovenly best friend Ed (Nick Frost, man among men) trek across London to save Shaun's mum and win back the girl. Guts get spewed and brains get eaten along the way, but Shaun becomes a man at last. Atomic Cowboy (4140 Manchester Avenue; 314-775-0775 or screens Shaun of the Dead at this month’s Bike-In Movie Night. The film begins at dusk, admission is free, and there will New Belgium Beer specials all night -- bike riders get a special on top of that New Belgium special, by the way.
