Opera is ostentatious, lengthy and difficult to comprehend if you only speak English -- these are the usual knocks against it. But for L’amour, none of those slights are true. UMSL Opera Theatre presents romantic scenes from great operas such as Carmen, La Traviata and The Tales of Hoffman that illuminate themes of love, hope and longing. Love is the international language, so you’ll understand everything, and the individual scenes don’t require you to keep up with all the plots and counter plots. As for the ostentation, well, it’ll still be there -- but only in the performances. And when it comes to love and music, a bit of drama is always nice. L’amour is performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday (February 4 and 5) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the Univerity of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive and Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Admission is free.
