Love Is A Beacon in the Night

Captain Corcoran is a gallant officer of the Royal Navy, a man who commands the respect of his crew (all polite men) and who never utters a coarse word. Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty (Captain Corcoran's boss), has proposed marriage to Josephine, the Captain's daughter, and he has given his approval. The problem is Josephine loves common sailor Ralph Rackstraw — who wouldn't want to be "Mrs. Rackstraw?" — and her impending marriage puts a kink in their relationship. Yes, things are quite muddled on the H.M.S. Pinafore, but in an enjoyably comic fashion. The St. Louis Beacon presents a gala performance of H.M.S. Pinafore with soprano Christine Brewer as Josephine, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra conductor David Robertson as Captain Corcoran and Timothy O'Leary (pictured, the general director of Opera Theatre St. Louis) as Ralph Rackstraw. The show is a fundraiser for the Beacon, and it begins with a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or; the performance starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $55 to $75.
