As a fireman, Yank stokes the ship's boilers on one of those new, powerful ocean liners. He's proud of the work he does, and he's good at it. But then a wealthy young woman on her first ocean voyage comes below decks to see how the other half lives and is horrified by this swearing, burly brute and likens him to an animal. This single confrontation throws Yank out of whack. Who is he? What's his life really worth? Uncertain how to answer those questions, Yank leaves the safety of the boiler room and ventures out to seek revenge upon the world. In Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape, the plight of the working man is held up to the harsh electric light of the nascent Modern Age, but the darkness and shadows remain.
