Mariachi Christmas

Mariachi bands are one of those cultural signifiers that's used to shill everything from Mexican foods to Baja beachfront condos to tequila -- anything and everything proto-Mexican, in other words. But, as is the case with any genuine, deep-rooted cultural artifact that gets commodified into a cliche, the real living thing turns out to be compelling and timeless, never cheesy. Mariachi Los Camperos di Nati Cano proves that well. These Grammy-winning, Los Angeles-based veterans have been recording since the early '60s and scored their biggest mainstream recognition backing Linda Ronstadt on her 1987 album Canciones de Mi Padre. Tonight you can experience the pleasure of hearing them live and in person when the group joins the Compton Heights Concert Band for its annual Holiday Spectacular. The show takes place at 8 p.m. at the Peabody Opera House (1400 Market Street; 314-499-7600 or Tickets are $32 to $86.
