Maserati

9 p.m. Friday, September 18. The Billiken Club, in the Busch Student Center on the campus of Saint Louis University, 20 North Grand Boulevard.

While many Explosions-in-the-Mogwai-You-Black-Emperor-inspired groups drum along at a glacial pace, Maserati's cinematic inventions are as propulsive as the Italian cars that share its name. On the upcoming Passages, guitars traverse some familiar roads — hypnotic repetition and sparkling, delay-drenched leads — but the most interesting detours come from drummer Jerry Fuchs. Thanks to subtle hi-hat phrasing, unstoppable kick drum and metronomic twos-and-fours, Maserati lands somewhere between the world's most danceable post-rock band and most post-rocking dance band. Fuchs' percussive proficiency has proven to be a blessing and curse: The band has toured less ever since he landed gigs as touring drummer for both !!! and LCD Soundsystem, but this logistical stepping stone has just added another level of urgency to Maserati's already heart-stopping live shows.
