Mates of State/Headlights

9 p.m. Sunday, June 8. The Bluebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Insulin-shock alert at the Bluebird! The husband-and-wife duo Mates of State specializes in syrupy-sweet indie-pop full of gossamer piano and Disney-whimsical orchestration. This year's Re-Arrange Us smooths out the rough new-wave edges of 2006's Bring It Back, in favor of hushed lullabies that whisper like a twirling tulle skirt. Honorary Lou band Headlights — while hailing from Champaign, Illinois, it plays here more than many local acts — nearly matches Mates of States' sugar-pop heights on the new Some Racing, Some Stopping. In fact, the album's vocal sweetheart blushes and fragile keyboards resemble the Breeders forming a Death Cab for Cutie cover band.
