A White Army (anti-communist) platoon, led by the devious general Denikin, lays siege to a southern city during the civil war. Refusing to be trapped -- and with some important business elsewhere -- communist cadre Zavarzin (the dynamic Igor Savkin) leads a ragtag group of resisters, including a nurse and a disguised White Army officer, in a daring escape attempt involving rolling machine gun carts. When not focused on the action sequences, Samsonov ratchets up the dramatic tension, as the threat of imminent betrayal hangs over Zavarzin and his desperate fellow travelers.
