Sitting quietly in a pitch-black movie theater has been a date-night staple for years, but it's hardly the best way to get to know someone. Fortunately, the St. Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org) is here to help potential brides-to-be with a surefire way of finding out if that Frankenstein they've been eyeing is made of the right stuff. October's First Friday event, What Makes a Monster?, offers a monstrous mashup of things to do for couples and lone werewolves alike. Activities include mask-making, a discussion on the stuff of nightmares titled "Our Monsters, Ourselves," and a production of Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble's Mary Shelley Monster Show. The evening concludes with a screening of 1931's Frankenstein in the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. At the same time in the OMNIMAX Theater, a second monster movie (determined by online voting) screens. The fun begins at 6 p.m. and admission is free, but some activities require a small fee ($5 to $6).
