Murder By Death/ Reverend Horton Heat

7 p.m. Saturday, August 18. Pop's, 1403 Mississippi Avenue, Sauget, Illinois

While Murder By Death's current tour alongside the Reverend Horton Heat may seem like an odd pairing, it actually makes perfect sense. Despite the fact that the Bloomington, Indiana, rock band's debut came out on the same label (Eyeball) that jumpstarted the career of My Chemical Romance, MBD has always had a sinister streak. Sporting a guitar shaped like a ball of flames, frontman Adam Turla croons like a demented Johnny Cash on "Brother" (a song found on its latest disc, In Bocca al Lupo), while the rest of the act swings like a veteran speakeasy house band. "So brother, raise another pint/Rev your engine, drive off in the night," Turla sings during the aforementioned track — and, honestly, that couplet describes the band best.
