Mystery Packs A Suitcase

In Jacques Rivette's French new-wave thriller Le Pont du Nord, Rivette regular Bulle Ogier stars as a claustrophobic ex-con who encounters a young, self-proclaimed kung-fu expert who is inexplicably driven to slash the eyes from the faces of Paris' billboards. The two women attempt to piece together a meaning behind the contents of a mysterious suitcase, packed with odd clippings, patterns and city maps. Bulle's real-life daughter Pascale Ogier shines as the knife-wielding hood, but her career was tragically cut short by a heart attack on the eve of her 26th birthday. Le Pont du Nord screens at 7 p.m. this evening at the Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or as part of the Webster University Film Series' Classic French Film Festival. Admission is $10 to $12.
