Remember the '90s? No, not the mainstream '90s, the underground '90s, when bands played obtuse math-rock and post-punk to adoring crowds who didn't care how tight the singer's jeans were or what shade of neon an act's merch table had in stock. The era of Fugazi, At the Drive-In, No Knife, Cap'n Jazz and so many other before-their-time bands is the driving force behind the Indiana quartet Native and Michigan quintet La Dispute. The two bands have no problem summoning up their emocore ancestors on recordings, and the energy each band carries onstage is infectious. Typically, New Year's Eve shows are booked to be sure things, with well-known and beloved acts playing a set of crowd-pleasers to the masses. If you want to give your ears one last challenge before 2010, you've found the right show to attend.
