Nicholas Nixon: 40 Years of the Brown Sisters

There's just something about family photos. The subterranean intricacies of relationships forged over time, the secrets never shared even among blood relatives, the sense of a simultaneous closeness and distance -- all often coexist within the frame of the photograph, a universe unto itself. Any amateur family snapshot can convey these mysteries, but it's the professional photographer who really understands composition, lighting and context. Take Nicholas Nixon. In 1975 he began photographing his wife, Beverly Brown, and her three sisters, and never stopped. Nicholas Nixon: 40 Years of the Brown Sisters charts time's changes on the women and archives a visual history anyone from any family will find compelling.
