The first two productions of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis this year have been lighthearted, good fun; now, it's time to bear down and lay bare the darkness of the human soul as only opera can. Michael Berkeley's adaptation of Jane Eyre receives its American premiere at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road, Webster Groves; 314-961-0644 or www.experienceopera.org), and it promises to work your nerves. Young governess Jane falls in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester, as often happens in these cases. But the former Mrs. Rochester, something of a nutter, continues to haunt the Rochester home — perhaps more than Mr. Rochester cares to admit. What follows is, of course, tragic vengeance, delivered at high volume and fever pitch. Tickets for Jane Eyre are $40 to $105.
