The flannel-clad fuzz rock of Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship is an ode to the three-year span between Sonic Youth's 1988 masterpiece Daydream Nation and Nirvana's 1991 groundbreaking Nevermind. Excavation of the Omaha trio's Slumber Party Records debut, My Name Is What Is Your Name, finds imprints of the pre-grunge/post-punk era: pop songs fossilized by eons' worth of Marshall-stacked noise. Even the occasional moments of ethereal fretwork display a punk band's glorious lack of restraint. Noah's Ark Was A Spaceship proves worthy of its excellent name, pummeling its cymbals, bass strings and stomp boxes with the vigor of the 2001: A Space Odyssey primates discovering how to use bones as weapons.
