Graffiti has evolved from being the nuisance on the walls to being appreciated as legitimate artistic expression, at least in the eyes of the public. To the painters, graffiti was always legit; the only difference between then and now is now they're invited into the galleries. Case in point is Heavy Hitters, the new show at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South Twelfth Street; 314-771-8230 or www.madart.com). Sixteen graffiti artists such as Peat Wollaeger, Simple, Shai Dahan, masai and Leon Rainbow were selected by curator Burn353 -- also a painter of note -- for this collaborative exhibit that demonstrates the range and possibility of street art. Heavy Hitters opens with a free public reception from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, September 2. DJ ME and DJ Binks will spin, and the cash bar will be in effect. Hours are by appointment through Saturday, October 1.
