The college years are traditionally a period of experimentation, a time to find out who the adult you really is. Of course, no one ever figures that out in four years, Socrates be damned. That hasn't stopped the self-improvement gurus from flooding the market with books that purportedly can make you sexier, saner, happier and less like the miserable hump you've found yourself to be. In this dual spirit of experimentation and flimflammery, Theatre 310b presents Whammy! Seven Secrets to a Sane Self, a movement-based play with no characters that explores our need to pay someone to tell us we're not good enough yet. The student and faculty company incorporates found text and audience quizzes in the piece, making it an excellent opener for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Xfest, a theatrical festival celebrating experimental theater that includes performances by New York City's Red Metal Mailbox and Seattle's UMO. Shows are performed at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (May 12 through 15) in Metcalf Theater on SIUE's campus (I-270 and Route 157; 618-650-2774 or www.siue.edu/xfest; UMO performs in Dunham Hall Theater). Admission is $13 to $27.
