One Night in China

Quick question: What's the best way to take in 5,000 years of an ancient culture's musical and choreographical civilization without even getting up from your seat? Answer: Shen Yun. Founded in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts is a New York-based nonprofit troupe that came into being in order to revive the nearly lost heritage of Chinese classical music and dance, which fell victim to the twin depredations of Communist orthodoxy and the Cultural Revolution. Ornately costumed dancers enact their elegant choreography to the soundscapes of all-original orchestral compositions; the resulting visual and aural magnificence is the antithesis of modern China's stranglehold of concrete and pollution. In fact, you can't see a Shen Yun performance in China today. Shen Yun has dazzled audiences around the world, and now it's our turn to experience this global phenomenon. Shen Yun performs its magic at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (April 19 through 21) at the Peabody Opera House (1400 Market Street; 314-499-7600 or www.peabodyoperahouse.com). Tickets are $60 to $135.
