Opera to the Power of Four

You've happened to awake from your winter slumber in Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7128). It's 7 p.m. on Friday night (January 25), and it seems you're at an opera. Yes, yes, it is indeed an opera performance that's being put on by the university's Opera Studio. You look in your wallet and notice you still have cash — it appears that this show only set you back $5 to $10. Not bad. But wait: This doesn't appear to be just one opera; the group is doing pieces from Cavalli's L'Ormindo, Mozart's The Magic Flute and The Abduction from the Seraglio, and Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld — all very interesting choices. The costuming is lovely, the voices are soaring — not a bad way to be roused from the winter doldrums. (And if you can't make the Friday-night show, know that there are also performances at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 27.)
