Over the Rhine

9 p.m. Thursday, August 20. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, 6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

In the course of twenty years and ten studio albums, Over the Rhine's core duo of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler has found the sweet spot in the nexus of country's front-porch strums, piano jazz's sultry smokiness and torch balladry's naked soul. The Ohio act has remained a cult band despite the best efforts of enamored critics and its fan base, even as its style has floated toward the mainstream via other acts. (For instance, Hem seemed to learn some of its wide-lens Americana and heartfelt acoustic soul from OTR's playbook.) The duo's last record, the excellent The Trumpet Child, is perfect for those who wish Norah Jones had a little more bite; also worth checking out is the fourth volume of its Live From Nowhere series. You, however, can catch them live from somewhere — specifically, the cozy confines of Blueberry Hill.
