On Bastille Day (July 14), the nation of France commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison with a hearty dose of military pomp and circumstance, as troops parade up the grand Champs Elysées in Paris. Tonight (Friday, July 13), the city of Maplewood celebrates Bastille Day a smidge early along its own magnificent rue (that would be Manchester Road) with Let Them Eat Art, a street fair that features live music, belly dancing, a firecracker dance, great eats and much more. The free fête begins at 6 p.m., and check-in is at Manchester Road and Marshall Avenue. Hoffman LaChance Contemporary (3100 Sutton Boulevard; 314-960-5322 or www.hoffmanlachancefineart.com) gets in on the fun with an artists’ reception from 6 to 10 p.m., and from 6 to 11 p.m., you can also stop by Boutique Chartreuse (7298 Manchester Road; www.boutiquechartreuse.com), a brand-new shop that features ecologically friendly designers. (If you want to keep the Frenchy feel throughout the weekend, head back over to HLC at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, for free screenings of two hallmarks of French New Wave film, François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows and Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless.)
Fri., July 13; Sat., July 14
