For those unsure about the difference between recently defunct pop-punk act the Starting Line and its more progressive offspring, Person L, here's a breakdown: The Starting Line was fronted by Kenny Vasoli. Person L is fronted by Kenneth Vasoli. That slight name shift speaks volumes about the music created in the one-time scene heartthrob's new group — it's a stunning mixture of second-wave emo (American Football), mid-'90s math rock (Jawbox) and classic soul (James Brown — seriously). It sounds bizarre, and it is sometimes, but when it works — as it does consistently on The Positives, Person L's new album, it's absolutely breathtaking. Vasoli & Co. have been road testing some of these new songs for over a year, so expect tight live arrangements and a boatload of auxiliary percussion from the group's two drummers. When Person L plays, it's like they're throwing the world's greatest dance party just for you.
