Physician Heals Himself

Doctor Dolittle, the Rex Harrison film musical, kinda tanked when it debuted. Too much sizzle, not enough steak (with the exception of Harrison's performance, which is charming). But Broadway legend Tommy Tune aims to repair what Hollywood botched by bringing the story of the polyglot veterinarian to the stage. Tune's version stars Tune himself as the good doctor, and his staging emphasizes the musical portion of the entertainment, as well as the kid-appeal of the Hugh Lofting stories that inspired the musical. Tune envisions his Dr. Dolittle as an ideal first musical for youngsters, but it also has enough spark and pizzazz to keep the parents entertained. Dr. Dolittle dialogues with the animals at 8 p.m. this evening at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or and continues at various times through Sunday, May 28. Tickets are $18 to $56.
