With the entrance of mid-April comes amazing temperatures, swimsuit shopping and planting. Summer's almost here, so get your seeds in the ground now to ensure the "t" in your summer BLTs and the corn cobs on your grill. But rest assured -- if the summer heat scorches your watermelons and your strawberries are stolen by mischievous squirrels, Missouri has the second largest number of farms of any state in the U.S. So if your garden fails, there are plenty of fresh options just beyond the backyard fence. Local food enthusiasts Maddie Earnest and Liz Fathman researched the plethora of area purveyors of all things nutritious and delicious for Missouri Harvest: A Guide to Growers and Producers in the Show-Me State through both their professional experience (Fathman is the publications manager at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and Earnest is the co-founder and co-owner of Local Harvest Grocery and Cafe) and personal enthusiasm for the edible. The authors will appear at Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) to discuss and sign copies of Missouri Harvest. The free program begins at 7 p.m. and ends when all guests are equipped with an arsenal of locavore knowledge.
