Where else is the pork steak as feted as it is in St. Louis? Nowhere, son. So it follows that Schlafly's Brew and Q World Pork Steak Championships will indeed feature the finest in pork steakery, because who knows more about the cut than us? The two-day celebration of piggery takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday (May 27 and 28) at the Schlafly Bottleworks (2760 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com). On Saturday, teams of amateur barbecueologists will be working the grills to produce their finest version of the pork steak, and the winner gets bragging rights, a trophy and $500 — that last prize may well be spent on more meat, because summer is just beginning. There will be plenty for non-competitors to eat and drink, and local bands play both days. Admission is free, but bring cash for, oh, maybe a little beer and BBQ.
