Serge, Marc and Yvan have been friends for a long time. They can and will say anything to one another — they're guys, it's what they do. Serge spends a ton of money (five figures) on a piece of fine modern art — a white canvas with a few white lines marked on it — and suddenly their friendship is in jeopardy. Marc hates the painting, a sentiment he discretely shares by referring to the painting as "white shit." Yvan laughs with Marc, but he also supports Serge's wish to attain the finer things in life. Serge is shocked that Marc doesn't support him — isn't friendship based on mutual support? Ah, but maybe this is not so much a friendship as it is a dictatorship of taste, and Marc fancies himself the unofficial tastemaker for the trio. Yasmina Reza's comedy Art attacks the pretensions of the upwardly mobile even as it reveals the base power plays that maintain "happy" friendships. The Black Rep presents Art at 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (May 5 through 23), at the Grandel Theater (3610 Grandel Square; 314-534-1111 or www.theblackrep.org). Tickets are $17 to $43.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: May 7. Continues through May 23, 2010
