Propaganda Films?

Director Sophie Fiennes' success with Zizek! and The Pervert's Guide to Cinema sparked another compelling examination of film and its effect on the casual viewer. The Pervert's Guide to Ideology centers on the intellectual mind of Slavoj Zizek and his ruminations on a scope of celluloid endeavors. Themes and values in The Dark Knight and Titanic are laid side by side with those of Nazi propaganda films, and the secret philosophical underpinnings of Full Metal Jacket, Taxi Driver and The Sound of Music are also exposed. All this and a score by Brian Eno, too. Get your cerebral swerve on at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Wednesday (January 10 through 15) in the Winifred Moore Auditorium on Webster University's campus (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $4 to $6.
