Psychic Detective on Speed

As far as films about psychic racecar drivers who solve mysteries based on their visions go, Baffled! isn't half bad. Mostly that's because of Leonard Nimoy, who gives racer/prophet Tom Kovack a devil-may-care attitude that adds an air of fun to the proceedings. Originally conceived as a pilot for a TV series that never came to pass, Baffled! suffers from the usual problems common to episodic '70s television. The characters are general issue at best, the problems and solutions fit between two commercial breaks and the pacing is clunky. But Nimoy makes something from nothing, and his early '70s fashions are entertaining in their own right. The Webster Film Series presents Baffled! at 8 p.m. at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries) as part of its Strange Brew celebration of cult films. Admission is $4.
