Put the "You" in "Costume"

There probably was a time when dressing in costume and parading around the Central West End were commonplace, even in the middle of summer, but that's not really the case anymore. The nabe is cosmopolitan, polished, cultured, grown up — well, at least, that's how you'll find it most of the time. Halloween offers a different picture. When this special holiday rolls around, the neighborhood lets down its hair, pulls on its collective mask and proves it still knows how to party and show its colorful, wild side. You, too, can display the freak show you're hiding under those professional, drab work clothes at 8 p.m. at the city's best Halloween party. The CWE's spooktacular, freaktastic street affair features a whole lot of folks having a fantastic time along with a super-competitive costume contest. If you're planning on taking part, you better be ready to work the crowd, and you best bring your A-plus game — people have been plotting and planning and crafting their costumes for months now. The epicenter for the party is at Maryland and North Euclid avenues, but bars all throughout the West End will be celebrating with drink specials and spooky tunes. To learn more about the evening's festivities, visit www.thecwe.org, where you can also see details about the pint-size parade (at 11 a.m.), trick-or-treating for the little ones (at noon) and the pup parade and costume contest (at 1 p.m.).
