Race Around the Lou

If ever there were a time to get back your bicycle legs, the ones you had in your youth that allowed you to pedal all day and all night, the Moonlight Ramble might be the perfect opportunity. Sure, thousands of folks turn out for this annual fundraiser for the Gateway Council of Hostelling International, but that means you'll have plenty of people around you offering tips, providing support and generally having a good time. Plus, the route will be easy to follow, and you probably won't even notice when your butt starts to ache from your old bike's hard seat or when your legs begin to wobble from peddling — you can choose to ride nine or nineteen miles, but don't be a hero, start with nine — because you'll be distracted by the refreshing feeling of the wind in your face and the exhilaration of the open road. To participate in the Ramble ($10 to $30), register in advance by visiting any number of local bike shops; check out for a full list or to sign up online. Riders can begin gathering in the upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park at 9 p.m. Saturday, August 21, to gear up for the ride, which begins at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, August 22. The after-party is held in the same lot beginning at 1 a.m. Good luck!
