MOONFLOWER LOVE
Still a great book: Thanks so much for your article about the revival of The Moonflower Vine ["Moonflower Resurrection," Aimee Levitt]. I had no idea this book by Jetta Carleton had such a great history. For more than 30 years, I've been under the delusion that I'm the only person in the world who appreciates this amazing book. I was lucky enough to stumble across a paperback copy in the '70s when I was in high school. It became and remains my favorite book of all time. I read your article and ran to the bookshelf, anxious to read it again, only to find that I've apparently lent it out. I'm off to Amazon for a new copy. I hope your article prompts many more people to read it. It seems to me to be as timely now as it was in 1962.

IF WE ONLY HAD A BRAIN
Lions, tigers and snarkiness, oh my: There was a very smarmy
tone in the whole article ["Honorary Pallbearers Albert Pujols and Jim
Edmonds No-Shows at Funeral for Munchkin," Chad Garrison]. Mickey
Carroll is remembered by RFT as "That Munchkin." True, most
everybody knows him from The Wizard of Oz, but you could have
written the article a bit more respectfully. But this is RFT;
they gotta be snarky.

SEXTING: KEEP GOVERNMENT OUT OF IT
Leave it up to parents: How about these girls taking digital
pictures and adding them to their Facebook or MySpace pages ["Missouri
Senate Wants Law Prohibiting Teen Sexting," Chad Garrison]? Or taking
pictures of them participating in underage drinking? A law prohibiting
something that can so easily be hidden seems a bit ludicrous. There is
an obvious problem, but it's the parents who need to get involved, not
the government.

HOLY HELL OVER HOLY COMMUNION
Let's pray on it: I agree with Archbishop Raymond Burke
["Former St. Louis Archbishop Can't Stop Denouncing Pro-Choice
Politicians," Chad Garrison]. People like Sen. John Kerry should not
receive Holy Communion in the Catholic Church. Every time they vote for
anything in favor of abortion they are committing the crime of murder.
It also is egregious that President Obama is invited to speak at Notre
Dame. If we can get the message out to the graduating students, I pray
they will not go to the ceremony. May God bless all of you who are
fighting for our American babies' lives.

Un-Christian attitude: Yeah, this makes no sense. No
politician wants abortion to be illegal. If it were, then the
Republicans would get half of the Catholic vote that they get now.
Almost nobody in Washington wants it to be illegal. Then they would
have nothing to fight about. Burke and those who give credence to his
ridiculous politics may be Catholics, but they don't seem very
Christian to me.

Isn't life strange?: Isn't the official position of the
Catholic Church that life begins at conception? I understand that
society as a whole is divided over the issue of choice. But if the
issue of life has been doctrinally determined — that this is
God's position — then why is there some mention of polling, as
though this ought to somehow be influencing the decision as to whether
abortion is right or wrong? If the Church dies, it will more likely be
because it no longer stands for anything.

Go get 'em, Burke: We need more warrior bishops like Burke.
The facts on abortion killing a human being are indefensible. Why not
make it OK to kill a two-year-old? Morally, there is no difference. The
abortion issue and the Catholics pandering to the left in hopes of
converting them to pro-life proves yet again that you cannot compromise
with evil without being overcome by it.

ALL-STAR ASS CLOWN
His name earns him the honor: Just owning up to the name of
Brewster McCracken should have won him the title of "Ass Clown of the
Week." ["Austin Mayoral Candidate Who Used St. Louis As Campaign Issue
Bows out of Race," Chad Garrison] At the end of the year, you should
run all of the 2009 ass clowns against each other; I bet Brewster would
win hands down!

FALLING DOWN DRUNK, GOOD
Pissing on houses, bad: I hate to say it, since I love
Soulard Oktoberfest, but I think they might have a point ["Controversy
Brewing Over Soulard Oktoberfest," Keegan Hamilton]. If the revelers
don't respect Soulard, then why should Soulard respect their
Oktoberfest party? I love to go to Soulard and get drunk and fall down
on the streets, but peeing on houses and pulling out flowers? Hey, man,
you gotta respect Soulard and its residents.
