Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, but another event taking place this weekend kicks off the season with a sweet, smoky start: The Rib America Festival, the four-day paean to pork that takes over Soldiers Memorial downtown. But you can't enjoy a slab or ribs without some old-fashioned American rock & roll music, and Shooter Jennings and Big Head Todd and the Monsters kick things off on Friday night. Hair metal takes over for Saturday's quadruple-threat of Jackyl, L.A. Guns, Dokken and Poison's Bret Michaels, who will perform despite having recently suffered a brain hemorrhage. Sunday features a taste of mid-'90s alternative rock with Everclear and Collective Soul, and the fest wraps on Monday night with classic-rock survivors Foghat and Blue Öyster Cult. The entire schedule is available at www.ribamerica.com.
