Right Here, Right Now

In the early '90s, Ms. Day was filled with all of the promise and optimism of a typical teenager, which is to say she wasn't really that optimistic at all. To pass the time, she and her friends drove around, talking, laughing, crying and listening to tapes they made for each other. Note to the readers who were born in the early '90s: "Making tapes" is kind of like the practice of burning a CD for a friend, except that it involved a bit more skill on the song transitions. Anywho, upon hearing music from this time in her life, Day is immediately transported back to her friend's Rabbit convertible on a unusually warm spring night, or another friend's Sunbird on the way home from a college visit, or even another friend's butter-yellow boat of an Oldsmobile on an evening-long quest to find The Party (we never found it). And tonight, while she might be driving around in those cars in spirit, she will actually be at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org) from 6 to 9 p.m. for DJ/91-94, an evening of early '90s music, free food and complimentary drinks. Admission to the nostalgia tour is free — just like gas practically was in those days. Damn, Ms. Day's old.
