Rio de Janeiro and the World

When: Wed., Oct. 19, 6-8 p.m. 2016
Phone: 314-935-4523
New York University's Shelley Rice presents the inaugural Women and the Kemper lecture, entitled Rio de Janeiro and the World: Marc Ferrez, Photographic Mobility, and International Modernity. Born in Brazil of French parents and raised in Paris, Marc Ferrez (1843–1923) was the most celebrated studio photographer in Rio during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His international career defies all attempts to define a “center” and a “periphery” in photographic history, and opens up a new map of modernism based on the mobility, portability, and reproducibility of image networks that were global long before our time.
