River Styx at the Tavern

Some books are easier to sell than others. Ask any area bookseller about Anton DiSclafani's debut novel, 2013's The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls. Your feedback will boil down to: That one blows off the shelf like oak leaves exit branches at this time of year. DiSclafani's success (of the local variety in particular) was facilitated by her book itself being very good and the incidental fact that she lives in St. Louis. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1930, the story relates fifteen-year-old Thea Atwell's sudden immersion into a daunting new galaxy of wealth and all the social complexity it entails. Another St. Louis writer, poet Virginia Slachman, also reads as part of River Styx at the Tavern reading series.
