S. Carey

8 p.m. Monday, April 4. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

As the classically trained percussionist for Bon Iver, S. Carey has been relegated to the lo-fi shadows. As captured on last year's disarming and meditative All We Grow, Carey finds his own voice in the crowded space of indie bedroom folk. In literal terms that voice is a soft, smooth and melancholy tenor, sometimes easing into falsetto, holding notes like hits of homegrown and phrasing as if he has no one to impress but the woodland creatures of his native Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In a metaphorical sense, Carey's voice is humane and open to the vicissitudes of time. It's captured most eloquently on "In the Stream," a song that's as Proustian as atmospheric piano pop gets, a five-minute headphone excursion into scuffed cello, sliding bass, distant thumps and minimalist classical melodies.
