Saved by the Ball

If reruns of Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210 are to be believed, sand volleyball is a very important part of life. A game can help solve any kind of argument or rivalry, you can meet potential mates out by the net, and playing on the beach keeps you tan and in shape, two things that are practically essential for health and happiness — well, TV health and happiness, that is. Of course, we all know that it takes much more than fitness and bronzed skin to be content, but sitting out in the sand, drinking a couple of beers and watching a few games of sand volleyball sounds pretty good to us! To catch some serves, some rays and some smiles, head to Wave Taco (1335 Convention Plaza; 314-241-8226) from noon to 7 p.m. The bar hosts a sand-volleyball tournament benefiting Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, an organization that supports soldiers returning home from war. Admission to the day of cheering on your favorite team and donating money to a good cause costs $25 in advance and $30 at the door (military ID holders are free); learn more at www.voief.org.
