You know, being a hip-hop DJ isn't as easy as you might think. It's not about merely throwing on the latest radio and club hits (and only those tracks) one after another and hoping the mix sounds danceable. Nope, art and musicianship often exist behind the turntables, and achieving both is a complex skill mastered by a select few. Don't think so? Just attend the screening of Doug Pray's 2001 documentary Scratch tonight at 7 p.m., and you'll meet some stellar hip-hop DJs — including Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys) and DJ Q-Bert — and see them perform in studio and in concert. Afterward, you'll better understand their talents, and you might even be inspired to take part in the live DJ battle immediately following the film.
