Janaina Tschaepe livened up Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in 2006 with color photographs of her manufactured monsters. Similar creatures appear in her video installation, Janaina Tschaepe: The Ocean Within. This dreamy and disorienting video plunks you into clear ocean waters, just below the surface. The currents languorously roll you over so the waterline trades places with the skyline; you bump into a bright yellow orb, then bob away, dipping back below the water. A pink sphere with ropy tentacles brushes against you, orbits you and drifts off. All the while the steady churn of the water gurgles and slops, marine snow and seagrass swirling by on infinite journeys. It's the perfect vacation to unknown territory, one that mystifies as much as it refreshes. Janaina Tschaepe: The Ocean Within is on display Tuesday through Sunday through October 19, in gallery 301 at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park (314-721-0072 or Admission is free.
