Ricky Jay knows stuff, and he ain't talking. So how does he sit at the center of the documentary Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay? He's a world class magician, a collector of arcane lore and the designer of many of the greatest tricks of stage and screen -- all talents that rely on his ability to show rather than tell. And that's what Deceptive Practice does: It shows you what Jay can do, but never tells you how he does it. He can perforate a watermelon from ten feet away by hurling single playing cards like daggers, or he can pull your card from that same deck over and over all night, with either hand. But more than demonstrating his many skills, Molly Bernstein's documentary explores where Jay's inspiration comes from: His past in Brooklyn, the great magicians he studied, and the lost secrets he hunts down and shares in his histories of magic and sideshow performers. The St. Louis Jewish Film Festival presents a 4 p.m. screening of Deceptive Practice today at the Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; 314-442-3179 or Tickets are $12.
